European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed concern that Hungary's coronavirus restriction measures have exceeded the limit and insists that the time frame should be contained and subject to scrutiny.
On Monday, the Hungarian parliament granted Prime Minister Viktor Orban an indefinite right to rule by decree and to impose prison terms on anyone who obstructs measures to curb the spread of the virus or spreads false information about the epidemic.
"I am concerned about the persistence of some measures, and I am particularly concerned about the situation in Hungary," Von der Leyen said in a news conference on Thursday.
"The emergency procedures should be limited to what is necessary, and they must be strictly proportionate, because they must be appropriate to the situation, and should not continue indefinitely, and most importantly, they must be subject to regular scrutiny."
