Theresa May sets out tech-driven plan for post-Brexit customs

British Prime Minister Theresa May has set out the terms of a customs scheme that allows Britain to freely set tariffs on goods coming to the country after leaving the EU.

Under the new facilitated customs arrangements, Britain will use technology to determine whether the goods entering the country will eventually end up in the UK or the EU, and therefore what tariffs should be paid.

The EU and Britain have yet to agree on the kind of trading relationship that will follow Brexit in March. Theresa May is expected to meet with senior ministers under mounting pressure to heal her government's rift to talk about Britain's future relationship with the EU on Friday.

The outcome of this meeting is seen as crucial to advancing the Brexit negotiations. It is unclear whether the ministers or the EU will support Theresa May’s plan.
