Peter Praet, chief economist at the European Central Bank (ECB), answered questions on Twitter as follows:

  • Monetary history shows that maintaining price stability is the best contribution of central banks to sustainable economic growth.
  • The completion of the banking union is a key factor in the smooth functioning of the eurozone.
  • The ECB is looking at a large range of inflation indicators, and if I have a choice I will choose the simplest one, core inflation.
  • Committed to reaching the inflation target.
  • The ECB's forward guidance make its policy more predictable and decreases uncertainty.
  • Financial stability considerations are an inseparable part of our discussion of monetary policy.
