US, Mexico agree to speed up NAFTA talks

Mexico and the United States agreed yesterday to intensify talks on updating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in hopes of reaching an agreement on key issues by August, the Mexican economy minister said.

NAFTA talks have been stalled between the United States, Mexico and Canada since June when the United States imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum. Mexico and Canada have taken reprisals against various US products.

Trump suggested he might seek a bilateral deal with Mexico, but the Mexican economy minister said talks with the United States would lead to discussions with Canada and a tripartite dialogue as we approach a result. Talks on renewing the NAFTA agreement began in August 2017 on the request of Trump, who threatened to withdraw from the agreement unless he had more benefits.
