Media reports said that Martin Schulz, the leader of the German Social Democratic Party, will step down to Andrea Nahlis if he becomes foreign minister in the coalition government with the conservatives led by Angela Merkel.

Schulz agreed to hand over the party leadership to Andrea Nahlis, citing party sources. The proposal will be presented to senior party officials later on Wednesday. Schulz will relinquish the party presidency if party members agree to the new coalition deal with Merkel reached this morning.

SPD made no comment on these reports.
