Iran's cabinet has appointed a new governor of Iran's central bank, according to the official IRNA news agency, as the country struggles with a faltering economy and Iranian riyal, which has spurred public protests.

Abdul Nasser Hemmati was appointed in place of Valiollah Seif, and no explanation was given as to why the former governor was deposed. In May, the United States imposed sanctions on Valiollah Seif, accusing him of transferring millions of dollars to Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
