Hammond: UK is committed to free trade

Britain has pledged to promote free and open trade and hopes to have unlimited opportunities from the China Belt and Road Initiative, according to British Treasury Secretary Philip Hammond.

Hammond is in Beijing this week in the latest instalment of long-term economic talks between the two countries, which have become of great importance to Britain as it looks to find itself as a global trading nation after the EU leaves in 2019.

His trip also comes against the backdrop of increasingly charged trade relations between China and the United States. China has been seeking support from European countries to find common ground against the United States, which is also locked in a separate trade dispute with the European Union.

During a meeting with a magazine, Hammond stressed that Britain is committed to promoting free and open trade and with the new relationship between Britain and its EU partners, Britain will deepen trade closures with other parts of the world.
