A final step to avoid political deadlock in Italy

14 May 2018 03:29 PM

Two parties opposed to reforms in Italy are due to present details of the coalition agreement. The left-wing party Lega and the leftist five-star movement will meet today with the Italian president to draw up plans for the new government, which could end the political deadlock.

The parties will submit several names for the nomination of the next prime minister. The five-star movement supporting Giulio Sapelli, a professor of economics, while the Lega supporting Giuseppe Conte, a law professor, president Sergio Mattarella will have the final word.

Whatever consensus has been reached on the name of a person to become prime minister, Italy will avoid holding new elections. The five-star movement got the highest votes but was not enough to govern alone.
