European stocks tumbled in the beginning session of the new year as mining stocks plummeted, and banks and oil company’s shares were not up enough to stop the decline. The STOXX 600 index shed by 0.2%, while the STOXXE was down by 0.3%.

The mining sector hit its highest level in five years at the end of last week as copper and other key metals rose, with traders starting to take profits early this week. Also, oil prices supported oil company’s shares across the euro area.
