Catalonia has postponed the election of a new president until further notice after the Supreme Court of Spain declared that the only candidate, Carles Puigdemont, was ineligible for while he remains a fugitive from justice in Belgium.

Catalonia's independence campaign has sparked many conflicts with Spain's central government, which say any move toward secession from Spain is unconstitutional.

The Catalan parliament speaker hasn’t announced any reason for the postponement and will not offer an alternative candidate. The separatists have a majority in parliament and Puigdemont is sure to win the vote. And with remaining stick with their former Catalonia leader that they will continue their quest for secession, which will keep the central government in the direct control of the territory.

The Constitutional Court said on Saturday that Puigdemont could not be elected unless he was actually present in parliament with a court order. If he returns to Spain, Puigdemont faces the possibility of his arrest, and many of the government ministers already in jail awaiting trial for sedition and rebellion for their role in organizing the vote and declaring independence.
